Kolaba Fort (also spelled Kulaba or Kolaba Killa) is a historic sea fort located about 1-2 kilometres off the shore of Alibaug beach. It was built during the Maratha era, used as a naval stronghold, and is now a protected monument and popular tourist attraction. The fort is known for its rugged charm, sea views, temples inside, and interesting architecture.
- History & Architecture
- The fort was fortified under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century with the goal of protecting the Konkan coastline.
- Walls standing about 25 feet high, built with large stone blocks.
- Inside the fort you’ll find old cannons, carvings of animals and birds on the walls, and remnants of old structures.
- There are temples inside — Siddhivinayak Temple (established in 1759 by Raghoji Angre), Mahishasura Temple, and also a Dargah of Haji Kamaluddin Shah.
- Despite being surrounded by seawater, there are freshwater wells inside the fort, which is an interesting feature.
